The Khammam city holds many significant places to visit. One such place is the famous Khammam Fort. The fort holds historical significance not just for the Khammam city, but also for the entire state of Telangana. Morning walkers and heritage enthusiasts from various walks of life can stroll through the expansive fort gaining an insight into the architectural marvel and its hoary past.

Construction of Khammam fort
This marvelous fort of Khammam was built during 950 AD .This was constructed by Musunuri Kamma Kings . It served as an impregnable citadel during various regimes of different dynasties, including the Qutub Shahi’s and Asaf Jahis.Initially it was a mud fort built by the tree brothers namely Ranga Reddy, Lakna Reddy, Velma Reddy.[not Kakatiya Kings] Later Akni reddy and Akki reddy of Kondapuram came to khammam with the Gajapathi’s of Orissa and continued the construction of the fort in 997 AD. The Khammam fort was completed in 1006 AD
- Asaf Jahi’s who ruled during 17’Th century, built the fort on the rock with huge granites.
- The fort has 10 entrances, lower fort of the western side is the main entrance and the eastern side is called as “Raati Darwaza” or “Pattar Darwaza”.
- A number of balconies and windows are constructed along the wall in order to use the artillery during wartime. It has a capacity of mounting at least 60 cannons at a time.
- There is an old Mosque and Mahal inside the fort constructed during the period of Zafar Bouli which is 60 feet long and 20 feet wide.
- There was a lake at the bottom of the fort hill and a secret pathway constructed underground and also channels were made to store the rain water in those days.
Tourism Development of Khammam fort
Khammam fort was notified as a protected monument by the Archaeology Department several decades ago. For showcasing the historical significance of the fort dating back to 950 AD of the Kakatiya era and sensitising the participants on the need to conserve it. Despite decades of neglect, the historical edifice, which once flourished with regal opulence, presents its alluring charm due to its architectural splendor.Turning the spotlight on the tourism potential of the historical Khammam Fort in the town and the imperative need for the tourism department to
preserve it.
- Tourism Department had started developing this place by constructing railings, sheds and also put on lights throughout the fort for better view.
- Tourism Department organises a heritage walk for generating much enthusiasm among the participants in pursuit of exploring the majestic grandeur of the ancient fort.
- Today, the fort stands proud after having completed more than 1,000 years of its existence.
- It's a significant tourist spot and holds the place of pride within the history of the state.
- This fort has tremendous historic value even today. Tourists coming here can explore this fort and admire its marvelous architecture.
How to reach Khammam fort
Reaching the Khamman fort is very easy for tourists as the city is well connected with other major
cities of India with the help of latest rail, road and airways.
- The nearest airport to the city of Khamman is Vijayawada Airport that is about 106 km away.
- Khammam has well connected railways to other major cities of the country via regular trains.
- There are buses from many different places thus tourists can easily get regular buses to Khammam from other major cities of the country.

Other special attraction
Tourists can even have view of another event place known as Stambhadri sambaralu held in Khammam. This festival is held as remembering the previous name “Stambhadri”. This festival is celebrated once a year annually in the month of January. The current name of Khammam is said to have been derived from the name of the temple ‘Narsimhadri’, later ‘Stamba Sikhari’ and so it had been termed as ‘Stambadhri’. The vertical rock beneath the temple is known as ‘KAMBA’. The name of the town Khammam seems to have been derived from the name of this hill of kamba and therefore the district is called as Khammam. Some other major tourist attractions of Khamman are Mominan Bazar, Seqel resorts, Tharuni hut, Khammam Fort, Karunagiri shrine and park, Lakaram lake and
Danavayagudem Botanical Garden.
